Integrated pest management research and development in cotton
1990
Paller, E.C. (Philippines Univ., Los Banos, College, Laguna (Philippines). Dept. of Agronomy)
Three pest management packages of different input levels were developed by the NCPC [National Crop Protection Center, University of the Philippines, College, Laguna, Philippines] cotton pest management component of the production technology recommended by CRDI [Cotton Research and Development Institute, Mariano Marcos State University, Batac, Ilocos Norte, Philippines], and calendar spraying. Three trials were conducted from 1981 to 1984, two at UP Los Banos, College, Laguna [Philippines] and one at a farmers field at San Jacinto, Pangasinan. The composition of the team and the various phases of the research are discussed. The medium pest management package consistently gave the highest net income in the three trials conducted. More recent component control strategies for cotton pests include: intercropping with corn and sorghum; and use of egg and larvae parasitoids of boll worm; possible use of resistant cultivars to leafhoppers; and fluazifop-butyl for "over the top" selective post-emergence control of grass weeds.
