Drum-type seed metering device: a study of optimum parameters of precision seeding

A drum-type internal pickup seed metering device for precision seeding was designed and tested. The parameters of the metering device such as cell speed, cutoff angle, cell shape, diameter of the cell ring, discharge angle, and guide plate clearance were tested as independent variables under laboratory conditions and in limited tests in the field. The performance of the device was greatly affected by cell shape, cutoff angle, and cell speed. With some modifications, such as replacing cell ring and guide plate, the metering device could also meter crops such as wheat and rice in a drill pattern. Laboratory results showed that the device can handle crops such as corn and soybean satisfactorily at cell speeds up to about 20 m/min, with cutoff angle of 105 degrees, 1 mm clearance of guide plate and cell ring, and a knockout located at the discharge position of 45 degrees. Cell parameters need to be determined according to seed size. Ten mm internal diameter and 13 mm external diameter with a slope on the cells consisted of the optimum shape for selected corn seed with 8.5 mm internal diameter and 11.5 mm external diameter for selected soybean seed. A power tiller-drawn field prototype, with a slit furrow opener for zero-tilled fields, was tested. All parameters of the seed metering device were determined according to the results of the laboratory study. Results of the field experiment showed that the metering device could uniformly handle the seed spacing of corn and soybean at a forward speed of 2.5 km/h. The accuracy rate of corn was 84 percent; missing and double rates were 10 and 16 percent, respectively. The average seed spacing was 21.82 cm for corn. The accuracy rate of soybean, with an average seed number of three seeds within 10 cm, was 95.12 percent.
