The Philippine Department of Agriculture (DA) [Quezon City, Philippines] and the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) [Los Banos, Laguna, Philippines] collaborated in the development of a paddy dryer for small- and medium-scale rice millers, traders, and farmer cooperatives for use in areas where rains often delay sundrying of the grain. Due to problems limiting the acceptability of such dryers (existing designs for low- and medium-capacity, below 10 tonnes/day). The following innovations were developed: 1) Cost has been reduced by drying grain to 16-19% moisture content (partial drying). This simplifies both design and operation, and allows for higher capacity. At this moisture content, paddy may be stored for several weeks with minimal deterioration, and then briefly sundried to approximately 14% when the weather is favorable; 2) Capacity has been increased by heating the paddy at relatively high temperature (80-95 deg C) during a single pass through the dryer with only 100 seconds duration. Test results indicate that this temperature exposure does not affect the milling quality of the paddy; 3) Using rice hull as fuel has been found economical and convenient with the use of a rice hull gasifier in place of a step-grate or cyclone-type furnace. Other features of the improved dryer are simplicity of fabrication and repair, low power requirement, and ease of adjusting size to customers' needs. Test results on a 0.81-1.3 tonne/hr prototype dryer installed in a commercial rice mill are reported in the paper.
