Effect of some natural protectants on seed quality of corn, mungbean, and cotton.
1991
Rule, A.B.
The effect of some natural protectants (dried leaves, seeds, wood ash or oil) and Sevin (insecticide) along with different packing materials on corn, mungbean, and cotton seed quality (percentage germination, vigor, moisture content, and 100-seed weight and percentage infestation for corn) was studied. Some botanical extracts were also assessed as to their effectiveness as pre-germination treatments when compared to the chemical fungicides, Arazan. The costs incurred in using the seed protectants were also evaluated, considering cost of inputs and seed germinabilities. Botanical extracts also improved germinability of corn and mungbean. Therefore, natural protectants can be used to substitute chemical protectants during storage and germination.
