Do crop rotation and green manuring have a place in the wheat farming systems of the warmer areas?

The effects of crop rotation and green manuring on cash crops are analyzed on the basis of double cropping wheat production systems in Brazil. This experience should have useful elements for research and development of crop rotations in other parts of the world. After testing and studying different green manure crops, it was found that Avena strigosa Schieb., Raphanus sativus L. Var. Oleiferus Metzg., and Lupinus albus L. are among the most promising green manure crops for the region studied. The effect of different green manure crops in reducing weed infestation, their influence on water infiltration and soil conservation, the residual effect of green manure crops on cash crops, and the economics of green manure crops are presented. It is also shown that adequate crop rotations result in better use of available machinery and labor, lead to reduced disease and weed infestations and N fertilizer requirements, and contribute to higher yields. Economic analysis shows that higher annual gross margins can be obtained with integrated crop rotations that include green manure crops and no tillage practices compared to traditional production systems
