Preliminary studies have been made on the progress of spear rot in oil palm at the Victoria plantation, where a considerable increase in the number of infected palms could be noticed from 1985 onwards. Linear regression analysis was used to estimate the logistic infection rate of the epidemic as defined by Van der Plank at different sites of the plantation. Significant differences were found between apparent infection rates of respective blocks and for reasons not yet fully understood the northern part of the plantation appeared to have a higher infection rate than the south. Irrespective of age, the plantings became infected with spear rot. The objective of the study was to characterize the progress of spear rot in time, in order to have a basis for further planning of actions with respect to the harvest and the longevity of the plantation.
