Relationship of Botryodiplodia theobromae Pat. isolates to cause gummosis disease on mango (Mangifera indica L. cv. Khiew Sawoey) and chemical treatment

Six isolates of Botryodiplodia theobromae from different symptoms and various localities were selected for morphological study. Conidial sizes of some isolates on artificial medium and plant tissue were distinctly different from the others. All of the fungal isolates could induce differences in severity of infected symptom on leaves and twigs of Khiew Sawoey mango by wounded inoculation. Among them, B. theobromae isolates from dying twigs from Chonburi Province and Bangkok Metropolitan were shown the most vigorous infection on young and mature leaves, green and brown color twigs of Khiew Sawoey mango. B. theobromae isolate from dying twigs from Chonbuti could infect rapidly on brown color twigs of Khiew Sawoey mango trees in orchard by artificial inoculation, however, sizes of the symptom were reduced when exposed for a longer period of time. Many isolates of B. theobromae were also recovered from tissues near the cut ends of green and brown color twigs of Khiew Sawoey mango from the orchard. The fungal isolates were also found on sterilized twigs which burried in soil at the foot of the mango trees. To control mango gummosis carbendazim fungicide was applied with five methods of application onto Khiew Sawoey mango trunks. Occurrence of gummosis symptom was different among the treatments but none of them has shown a complete eradication of this mango gummosis disease.
