Sirimas Rattanawannukul
Investigations of the amounts of lead, cadmium, copper and manganese in food of preschool children in Bangkok area were carried out. The food samples from 60 preschools were collected with 3 samples per school. The food samples were analysed and the heavy metals were detected by atomic absorption spectrophotometry. The results obtained indicated that the lead content found was in the range of 0.000-1.750 mg/kg, cadmium 0.000-0.106 mg/kg, copper 0.000-0.242 mg/kg and manganese 0.089-2.339 mg/kg. The average quantity of lead, cadmium copper and manganese were 0.316, 0.011, 0.530 and 0.678 mg/kg, respectively. The percentage of heavy metals in food samples collected were Mn 100, Cu 67.22, Pb 57.22 and Cd 38.89. The food samples were separated into 3 groups, depending on the size of school, i.e. large, medium and small. The result induces that the amount of heavy metals determined were of similar manner, Mn Pb Cu Cd and below the standard values.
