Effect of soil moisture stress on growth, total nitrogen and non structural carbohydrate in 3 varieties of soybean

Root and shoot growth of 14 and 21 days soybean plants were affected by soil moisture stress. Those effects were the decrease in total root lenght, number of nodule, internode number, leaf number, growth rate of leaf, flowering number and the dry weight. But there was an apparent increase in root growth when the plants of 28 days of age were under soil moisture stress condition. The affected phenomena were total root lenght, density of root and deep root. The amount of nitrogen and reducing sugar increased in most part of the stressed plant but the non-structural carbohydrate content decreased in the root and the leaf. It should be noted that the 81-1-038 varieties were able to withstand drought condition better than the S.J.4 and S.J.5 varieties.
