Effect of seedling ages on growth, quality and yield of Asparagus officinalis Linn. grown in heavy soil of Central Area [Thailand]

Seeds were sown monthly (treatment) from October 1987 to February 1988. Seedling growth of each treatment was compared at the age of 2.5 months. December seeding treatment showed the highest seedling height (43.90 cm) and number of fern per plant (8.60 ferns/plant) respectively while February seeding treatment showed the largest fern's diameter (2.5 mm). When the seedlings were 6.5, 5.5, 4.5, 3.5 and 2.5 months in June 1988 according to the seeding month. The seedling of 5.5 months old showed the maximum survival percentage (98.33), height (187.95 cm) and crown diameter (14.54 cm), while the seedling of the 6.5 months old has the maximum fern diameter (10.71 mm) at 8 months after transplanting. The 5.5 months old seedling was significant earlier in the number of days required from transplanting to first harvested spear (197 days) and to 50 percent of harvested plants (207.36 days). The yield (only 10 mm spear diameter) obtained from 5.5 months old seedling was significantly higher than other treatments, especially, in total harvested spear number (197.80), number of spear per plant(13.19) and spear diameter (12.43 mm), with the total yield of 1,203.10 kg/rai (21 cm spear length).
