Sweet potato improvement at the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture

The main aims of sweet potato improvement at IITA are: achieving high yield in terms of dry matter per unit of land and time; developing resistance to weevils (Curculionidae spp.), virus complexes and nematodes and ensuring good shelf life and good quality for consumer acceptance. The approaches used and progress made in sweet potato improvement at IITA since 1971 are summarised in this paper.
