Interaction between nitrogen and phosphorus in wheat nutrition

The influence of nitrogen and phosphorus on winter wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) was investigated in a long-term field experiment on smonitza soil (Vertisol) at Kragujevac (Yugoslavia). The cultivar was Kragujevacka 56, and the experiment was continued 7 years. At fertilization with nitrogen only, the average grain yield increased more than two times, the share of nitrogen in grain 31-36%, accumulation of nitrogen in total top yield 2.7 to 2.9 times, and that of phosphorus for 48-54%. In the same time the grain share of phosphorus decreased for about 19%. Fertilization with phosphorus and nitrogen, compared to nitrogen only, increased grain yield 6-11%, and in nonfavourable years considerably more. Grain phosphorus increased 7.4-7.7% accumulation of nitrogen and phosphorus increased too, while concentration of nitrogen decreased. Changes of nitrogen and phosphorus concentrations in the straw, under effect of fertilization, were 2-3 times higher than in the grain. Concentration of nitrogen in yield was in positive, and of phosphorus in negative correlation with grain yield. Accumulation of both elements was in positive correlation with yield. Between concentrations of nitrogen and phosphorus, in grain and straw, correlations were negative.
