Effect of spacing plants on yield and quality of hops

Experiments made over a period of 3 years showed the effect of the planting distance and number of strings on the yield and quality of hops of Vojvodina variety. The plants were planted on the same row spacing and three different spacing in a row. Four alternative systems of stringing were used. During the hop picking the yield of green mass per string and per plant was established, as well as the yield of dry cones per hectare and alpha-acids content. Experiments approved that participation of plant parts yield in total yield is the same in all variations of width of spacing and strings which means that the spacing of the plants has no effect on the mutual relations of yield components. The yield of hop cones much depends on the yield of other plant parts, i.e. on the yield of the whole plant. The spacing of the plants has a marked effect on the yield of dry cones. Increase in distance between the plants parallel to decrease of spacing strings, increase the yield per one hectare. The spacing of the plants has no effect on alpha-acids content. Increase of yield of cones, which depends on decrease of spacing plants, influences the increase of alpha-acids per unit of area as well.
