Effects of the ploughing depth upon the yield and quality of flue-cured tobacco

Effects of the ploughing depth on the yield and quality of flue-cured tobacco were investigated in three-year field trials. The trial soil was luvisol, of acid reaction, with a low content of soil colloids and organic matter and of very unstable structure. There were two trial treatments with six combinations (2 X 3). According to the split-block method three ploughing depths were randomized (20, 30 and 40 cm) on subsoiled (70 cm) and unsubsoiled soil, respectively. A significant effect of the subsoiled treatment was recorded in the first year when the tobacco yield rose by 10.8% in comparison with the unsubsoiled treatment. Ploughing depth rendered significant differences in all three investigation years whereas interactional effects of the treatments were recorded only in the first year. Parallel to increasing the ploughing depth, tobacco yields and nicotine content were increased as well. Bigger differences in tobacco yields between the ploughing depths at 30 and 40 cm were recorded in the first investigation year. On the average, tobacco contained less nicotine and more reducing sugar in the first than in the second and third investigation years. These differences were also a result of different amounts and distribution of precipitation between the investigation years.
