Mutagenic effect of 2,4-D on quantitative characteristics of wheat

The mutagenic effect of a herbicides in wheat was studied. The spring wheat cultivar Siete Cerros received high doses (5 and 10 times greater than prescribed agricultural levels) of 2.4-dichlorphenoxiacetic acid during the tillering stage. The direct effect of the herbicide was manifested in the M1 generation by decreases in plant height (89 and 84%, in relation to the control for 5 and 10 times respectively), spike length (91 and 87%), number of spikelets (98 and 97%), and number of kernels per spike (80 and 69%). In relation to the untreated control, M2 generation plants exhibited decreased plant height (92 and 89%), spike length (99 and 94%), number of spikelets (92 and 98%), and number of kernels per spike (97 and 98%). A decrease in the mean values as well as increases in the variability in the M2 generation strongly indicated that 2.4-D overdose resulted in mutagenic effect in quantitative traits.
