Evaluation of breeding values of bulls for body conformation and type traits using blup method

The evaluation of body conformation and type in the population of European Black Pine cattle is based on a system of visual evaluation of 14 traits on a scale from 1 to 9. The range of average values was from 4.15 for fore udder attachment to 6.36 for strength and capacity. Standard deviations were from 0.53 to 1.15 and coefficients of variability around 15% for pelvic width to 20% for fore udder attachment. A similar trend was present for mean values the population (micro) with small variations. Differences between bull-sires were significant or highly significant for height of rear udder, udder depth and udder balance, teat size, stature, dairy characteristics and pelvic width. However, the differences among farms were significant only for central support, teat size, dairy characteristics and pelvic width. Coefficients of phenotypic correlation ranged from rp = -0.217 (very weak) for udder depth and teat placement to rp = 0.517 (strong) for stature and strength and capacity. Breeding values for sires according to BLUP solutions are quite unfavorable, i.e. the approximate relationship of positive and negative solutions shows quite an unfavorable influence of bulls on body conformation and type. The absolute rank of bulls showed that further improvements within the general population are needed. More concrete conclusions should be based on combined effects including productive traits.
