Results of investigation into immunogenetic worth of the commercial or experimental vaccine against bovine leptospirosis

441 cattle were vaccinated and revaccinated in two villages of the Kolubara (Yugoslavia) borough for the determination of immunogenetic worth of the commercially available and the experimental vaccine against leptospirosis serotype pomona. Of the total number of cattle blood sera of 147 animals vaccinated with the commercially available vaccine were examined revealing leptospire antibodies in 112 sera (76.19%). Leptospire antibodies were also detected in 100 sera (91.76%) from the 109 animals vaccinated with the experimental vaccine. Antibody titre was 1:100-1:3000 in cattle vaccinated with the commercial vaccine, but 1:100-1:100000 in those vaccinated with the experimental vaccine. Immunogenic value of the experimental vaccine thus proved better, as a greater number of vaccinated animals created leptospire antibodies with the titre much higher than that in the animals vaccinated with the commercial vaccine. Both vaccines, though, provided fair protection as none of the vaccinated animals showed either clinical or any other symptoms of leptospirosis, although both groups were exposed to the infections while grazing.
