An experiment was conducted to study the efficacy of two fungicides in respect of germination, plant height, millable canes, weight of canes and fungal colonization in ungerminated setts. The use of Bavistin and Tecto extra showed significant differences on germination and ultimately on yield of sugarcane compared to control. Even different fungi representing nine genera were isolated from ungerminated setts. Treatment of setts by both fungicides reduced the fungal colonization on setts by Acromonium spp. (A. furcatum and A. terricola), Ceratocystis paradoxa, Drechslera sp., Fusarium monilliforme and Rhizopus nigricans over control. The performance of Bavistin 1 g/litre of water reduced pathogenic fungal colonization in setts quantitatively. To ensure good germination and to overcome guppy stands in the field, use of Bavistin to 1 g/litre water for 30 minutes was found more effective and may be recommended for sett treatment.
