Effect of age on the sex pheromone communication, circadian rhythm of mating activity, and adult emergence patterns of the pulse beetle, Callosobruchus chinensis (Coleoptera : Bruchidae)

The males of the pulse beetle, Callosobruchus chinensis L., show a peak of responsiveness to live females at an age of 3-7 days and maximum sex attractant pheromone release by females occurs 3-5 days after emergence. There was no clearly-defined circadian rhythm of mating activity but most activity occurred during the photoperiod (9 AM to 9 PM). The peak of male emergence was earlier than that of females in the first four days of emergence from cultures maintained in the laboratory.
