DPX E9636, a new low rate sulfonylurea for post-emergence weed control in corn

DPX E9636, (1-(4,6-dimethoxypyrimidin-2-yl)-3-(ethylsulfonyl-2-pyridylsulfonyl)urea), is a new selective post-emergence herbicide for the control of numerous annual and perennial grasses and broadleaf weeds in Zea mays. DPX E9636 has been evaluated in Belgium in field trials for two years. Results reported in this paper show that the low dosage rate of 10 g a.i.:ha + surfactant (0,1% v/v) has provided perfect control of Elymus repens, Echinochloa crus-galli and Poa annua, key noxious species in the grass weed control for corn in Belgium. Because of the rapid soil degradation of DPX E9636 no residual effect is observed, resulting in no control of late emerging ECHCG. The control of late flush of ECHCG requires as second application at 7.5 g a.i./ha + surfactant (0.1% v/v). A wide range of broadleaf weeds, including species which have become resistant to triazines, shows also sensitivity to this herbicide. In order to obtain complete dicot weed control, combination with dicot herbicide partners is needed. Results of combinations with pyridate are given in this paper.
