The subfamily of Pseudostenophylacines (Trichoptera, Limnephilidae)

Limnephilids of the subfamily Pseudostenophylacinae are remarquable in their high number of secondary sexual characters. The male genitalia are of the type with three paired appendages and are characterized by the shapes and disposition of these structures. The subfamily consists of the large genus Pseudostenophylax, which is made up of 14 species-groups, and of the smaller genera Phylostenax, Astratodes, Pseudopotamorites and Aplatyphylax. Actually, 76 species are known, 37 of which are described below as new. Their names are listed. The phylogeny of this taxon is only partially reconstructable. The subfamily originated in the oriental region, as the most primitive species and the greatest number of species occur there. Two secondary dispersals into the nearctic region are supposed to have happened during the Cenozoic. These insects are all cold stenothermic. The majority of them are exclusively nocturnal.
