A survey of 200 arthroscopies in 150 dogs and cats

200 arthroscopies were performed in 147 dogs and 3 cats during a 3year period. The total consisted of 83 stifles, 40 shoulders, 71 elbows and 6 hock joints. In the stifle joint traumatic lesions were most important, in the shoulder, elbow and hock joints osteochondrosis lesion were diagnosed most frequently. The arthroscopic findings were compared to the clinical and radiographic findings and in 81 cases to the arthrotomy findings. The most important advantage of arthroscopy is the larger number of correct diagnoses when compared to the clinical and radiographic examination. Arthroscopy was especially of value in the evaluation of synovial and cartilage lesions. By use of arthroscopy an early diagnosis of fragmented coronoid process could be made before development of arthrotic changes. In the evaluation of chronic meniscal lesions, arthroscopy proved to be less accurate. Arthroscopic surgery was mainly performed to treat shoulder and elbow osteochondrosis. The first results of this technique are given.
