Greenhouse evaluation of transgenic tomato plants, expressing a Bacillus thuringiensis insecticidal crystal protein, for control of Helicoverpa armigera (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae)

Significant control of Helicoverpa armigera transgenic tomatoes, expressing a Bacillus thuringiensis toxin, was observed in a greenhouse trial. Tomato plants were artificially infested with H. armigera eggs. Percentage of fruit injuries as well as number and size of larvae were significantly reduced. At high infestation level, percentage of injured control and CryIA(b) transgenic fruits was 52 % and 27 % after 17 days and, 72,5 % and 38 % after 24 days, respectively. Fruit injuries, both size and number, were also significantly reduced. Only few larvae on transgenic tomato plants migrated from the infested vine to other non-infested vines, so damage on non-infested vines was very low. High levels of artificial infestation (840 eggs per plant) were necessary to get an insect population uniform and dense enough to evaluate insect resistance.
