Drought response of five bean varieties (Phaseolus vulgaris L.). Preliminary study

Grain yield, components, evapotranspiration, vegetative development stages, and leaf area index were determined in five bean varieties under two oppossed irrigation treatments (wet and drought). The bean varieties employed were: Fleetwood (habit I); Pinto 114, Black Argel and A-211 CIAT (habit II); and Cuyano INIA (habit III). The irrigation treatments had significant effect on yield and its components, the degrees varying with the variety. Cuyano-INIA gave the highest grain yield, under the wet condition; on the other hand, Fleetwood gave the best yield under drought conditions. Fleetwood's greater productivity was due to its precocity which resulted in a lesser reduction in 100 seed weight, a hight number of pods per plant and seeds per pod. A-211 CIAT gave the lowest grain yield under both irrigation treatments. No significant correlations were found between the peak leaf area index and grain yield, in each treatment. However the relationship was inversely proportional between the duration of the canopy area and yield for the drought treatment
