[The environmental atlas of the Metropolitan region of Santiago]

The environmental Atlas of the Metropolitan Region of Santiago is made up by several coloured charts in a scale of 1:25,000 and 1:50,000. Here we present a synthesis in two coloured charts in a scale of 1:25,000 (representing Santiago and San Bernardo), showing the influence of human activity on the city's urban space. In this way, the maps identify the industrial districts, residential areas, pollution sources, green areas, land used in agriculture, irrigation canals, etc. All these indicators affect the environmental problems confronted by the metropolitan Santiago. The paper also suggests some practical principles of thematic cartography: selection of colors according to the character of each activity, selection of symbols in relation to the intensity and distribution of the impact. The conclusion insists on the importance this map-making should have in the development of better spatial planning
