Studies on the effects of non-Smith-Hazel indices for yield improvement in soybean populations with improved protein content

According to the strategy of selection for protein content in early generations and for yield in later ones, the practical selection effect of Ih index (with heritability as index coefficient), Ir index (with the correlation coefficient between traits and yield as index coefficient) and weight-free index were studied in this paper in order to evaluate the selection methods for yield at the plant-to-row stage of soybean populations with improved protein content. The results showed that the practical effect of index selection with appropriate trait components was better than that of direct yield selection; the optimum trait components for Ih and Ir indices in this study were number of branches + number of pods per plant + number of seeds per pod + 100-seed weight; for the weight-free index, they were number of branches + number of pods per plant + seed yield; the heritability and correlation coefficient between traits and yield used as index coefficient could be obtained from non-selection-acted populations
