Response of peppermint (Mentha piperita) to application of same microelements

The response of peppermint (Mentha piperita) to application of selected microelements was investigated in 3-year experiments. The analysis of growth and yield formation revealed a favourable effect of zinc in the first two years. In 1987 stem and branch weight and essential oil yield were significantly greater. In 1988, an extra application of zinc increased plant height, number of leaves per plant, weight of aboveground parts (leaves, stems, branches). The favourable effect was evident also in the yield of essential oils in 1988. In the third experimental year (1989), peppermint responded more markedly to manganese application, with the positive effect of zinc on increased essential oil contents and yields. The results indicated an important role of zinc on peppermint growing chiefly in the first two years. The favourable effect of manganese was not demonstrated before the third year. But it is necessary to take into account that the results were affected by weather conditions and that in pilot trials the harvesting date was dependent on the grower's needs.
