The influence of intensive defoliation of permanent grassland upon the weight of the root system

In 11th year of regular mineral nutrient application (0, 150 and 300 kg N.ha-1 P 32, K 88) on Anthoxantho-agrostietum grassland the changes in the root weights (0 - 100 mm) were observed, under threefold (K3) and fivefold (K5) defoliation conditions. Average data obtained over the vegetation period have shown that with the exception of the medium level of nitrogen, the root weights decreased by 8 and 35 percent (0 and 300 kg.ha-1 N, respectively). By N fertilization in the K5 mode of application, the root system weight of grassland has shown the explicit decrease (-14 percent and -25 percent), while in K3 mode marginal increase (75 percent) was found at 300 kg.ha-1 N dosages. The data obtained justify further implementation of intense defoliation influencing the grass ecosystem.
