Morphological and functional differentiation of the small intestinal mucosa in pigs

Morphological and functional differentiation of the small intestinal mucosa in pigs takes place in the late prenatal period. Between day 80 and 110 of foetal age the mucosa is differentiated into a villous and a cryptal portion and its lymphoreticular apparatus also develops considerably. Development of these characteristics continued in the observed postnatal period of pigs until 14th day of age. In 110 day old foetuses enzyme activity can also be observed in the mucosal epithelium, mainly in that of the jejunum. Alkaline and acid phosphatase, aminopeptidase, adenosinetriphosphatase, lower lactate and succinatedehydrogenase as well as glucoso-6-phosphate dehydrogenase revealed the highest histochemical activity. Relatively low activity was observed with the non-specific esterase. This histoenzymatic mucosal state persists also in the observed postnatal period until 14th day of age of the piglet.
