The authors examined the effect of a preparation containing nutrients and growth factors for ruminal bacteria on the level of ruminal fermentation in suckling lambs. Peroral administration of the preparation was started to one-week old lambs (1,5 g per lamb a day) over a period of 5 weeks. In 1, 4, 6 and 10 week of age, two lambs were slaughtered from the experimental and control group. In the lambs of the experimental group a higher portion of propionic and valeric acid was found in the ruminal fluid with the greatest differences occuring at 10 weeks of age (propionic acid 21.48 mol percent and 16.26 mol percent in experimental and control animals, respectively, valeric acid -1.91 mol percent and 0.85 mol percent in the experimental and control group, respectively). The higher level of ruminal fermentation in lambs of the experimental group has also been proved by means of scanning electron microscopy in 4 week old lambs. Obviously better developed papillae of the ruminal epithelium have been observed in the lambs of the experimental group.
