Insect Pests of Noug, Linseed and Brassica

There are about 36 insect species recorded on noug/niger seed (Guizotia abyssinica), linseed (Linum usitatissimum), and rapseed and mustard (Brassica spp.) in Ethiopia. Of these, noug fly, black pollen beetle, noug flower thrips, crickets, and apionid weevil (Piezotrachelus milkai) on noug, Africa boltworm on noug and linseed, and plusia worms on linseed and cabbage aphid, cabbage flea beetles (Phyllotreta mashonana and P. weiset), diamond black moth, cabbage white, and golden plusia on rapeseed and mustard are the insect pests of potential importance in the country. The rest are of negligible importance at present, but they should be monitored to see if there is any change, as insect pest populations are dynamic in nature. Moreover, a total of five parasitoids were identified on noug fly and Brassica aphid, but their degree of importance is not yet known.
