Effect of different levels of N, P and K on the Maize grain yield and protein content.

A total of eight different fertilization treatments: 0-0-0, 12-0-0, 24-0-0, 36-0-0, 24-10-0, 24-0-15, 24-10-15 and 0-10-15 were applied annually for three years (1983, 1984 and 1985) in a soil of the Agricultural Research Station of Vardates-Lamia. The effect of N was significant on the grain and protein yields. The grain yield without N was significantly lower than with N. The grain yield of the plots with 12 units of N was not different from the other levels of N in 1983, but was significantly lower in 1984 and 1985. The grain yield of the plots with 24 units of N, with or without P and K, had the same grain yield with the plots with 36 units of N in 1983 and 1984, while in 1985 it was found to be significantly lower. The effect of P and K, without N, on grain yield was not significant in all three years but it was significant in 1985 with the addition of N. The effect of N on grain protein was significant. The levels of 24 and 36 units of N had the same grain protein yield. The level of 12 units was not different from the other two levels in 1983 but it was significantly lower in 1984 and 1985. The effect of P and K on the yield of protein of grain was not significant independently of the presence of the N.
