Corn fertilization [Grain yield, harvest index, nitrogen harvest index, and nitrogen recovery]

The effect of various levels of N, P, K fertilizers on corn grain yield, Harvest Index (HI), Nitrogen Harvest Index (NHI) and N-recovery was studied in six field experiments in the areas of Thessaloniki, Lamia, Serres and Xanthi during the years 1982 and 1983. Four levels of N, i.e. 0, 100, 200 and 300 kg/ha and two levels of P and K, i.e. 0,100 kg/ha P2O2 and K2O, respectively, were used. In 1983, an additional level of N (400 kg/ha) was used. Grain yield and harvest index were significantly increased by nitrogen fertilization. Maximum grain yield, ranged from 11.2 to 15.7 tons/ha, was attained with 200 to 300 kg N/ha, whereas values of harvest index peaked at 100 kgN/ha (range 0.56 to 0.65). Nitrogen harvest index was not affected by nitrogen fertilization (range of values 0.72 to 0.80). The levels of nitrogen fertilization had a negative effect on fertilizer's nitrogen recovery, percentage which showed values of 75% level of 100 kg/ha and then declined to low values (23% to 36%) at the highest level of fertilization. The level of P and K fertilization used in these experiments had no consistent effect on the parameters studied (for a few cases).
