Trends in the leaf area of certain wheat varieties as a function of sowing time.

Trends in the leaf area of various wheat varieties (Baranjka, Mv 4, GK Zombor, Bucsanyi 20) were studied as a function of sowing date (late September, mid-October, early November) and seed quantity (germ number: 5 millionn/ha, 6 million/ha) on a Ramanns brown forest soil. Samples were taken weekly during the intensive phase of leaf area increase, and measurements were made using an LI 3000 leaf area meter. The size of the leaf area was strongly influenced by the variety, exhibiting the greatest values for Baranjka and Bucsanyi 20. The duration of the leaf area was also longest for these 2 varieties. In all years the sowing date had a significant influence on the size of the leaf area. In the course of the 3 years, the greatest leaf area was measured once for the late September sowing, and twice for the mid-October sowing, sowing in early November reduced the leaf area size for all varieties in all years. Late maturing varieties are less sensitive to delays in sowing.
