Appearance in Hungary of Dermocystidium erschowi parasite in the skin of carp.

In May 1991 a so far unknown cutaneous lesion was observed in a lowland fishery. In 50 o/o of the 3-year mirror carps of 0,75-1,0 kg weight, pea-sized protruding reddened forms were found on their skins, part of which were already deprived of epithelium. The lesion did not extend to the musculature, but only affected the subcutaneous connective tissues. In the specimens excised and sliced, light microscope examinations detected cysts, in which the unicellular organism was identified, on the basis of the size of cysts and the spores of an average 15 micron diameter, to be the species described, by the name Dermocystidum erschowi. The parasite must have been introduced in Hungary recently, and even the older fish are susceptible to it. The most important damage caused by the new parasite is the disgusting lesion and the dermatitis occasionally combined with it. At present the only prevention of the damage caused by the disease is to control the secondary bacterial infection, since no efficient medicine against it is available.
