Types of defects, marketing agents and technical factors determining the quality of exported coffee beans in Southern Sumatra

Information on factors determining the coffee bean quality was badly needed in formulating steps to improve coffee bean quality. A survey had been conducted in Southern Sumatra from March to October 1989 to characterize the defect types which determined the quality of export coffee beans, the agents responsible for the occurrence of such defects and the technical factors causing the defects. In this study, two sets of data were used. The first set consisted of figures on the number of defected export beans obtained from the Agency for Quality Control and Certification of Bandar Lampung, Bengkulu and Palembang. The second one consisted of figures indicating the number of defected beans in samples taken for smallholders, traders and exporters. Samples of smallholders and traders were taken in a cluster random sampling, whereas samples of exporters in simple random sampling. From each representative agents, coffee bean samples were taken in cluster random sampling in August and October. Discriminant analysis was applied and subsequently univariate analysis. This study revealed that brown beans made up the major defect type determining the exported coffee bean quality, followed by black beans. The number of brown beans as well as the water content were considerably high due to improper beans drying at farmers' level. Therefore, in order to improve the quality of export coffee beans, improvement in the drying technique of coffee beans at farmers' level is of paramount importance. The results are expected to improve coffee taste and consequently increase farmers' income.
