It was reported by PT BINA LESTARI that in March 1986 some trees of the mangrove forest in the Pedada Strait died due to unknown factors. For this reason a research concerning the site condition related to the mangrove forest deterioration had been carried out. In this research, the observation of soil properties in the field and the analyses of soil and water samples in the laboratory were conducted. Soil observation consisted of the description of soil profiles and soil augering under the decayed stand and the healthy stand of mangrove. Soil samples were taken each soil augering. Water samples were taken from each profile and augering and from the strait when low tide and high tide occured. The results showed that the concentration levels of soil nutrients and other elements are not deleterious to the mangrove trees. The concentrations of soil nutrients in the decayed mangrove stand are not significantly different from that of the healthy stand. The most possible reason of the mangrove deterioration in this area is the very low concentration of water salinity during the flood period in January 1986. The decayed mangrove trees were found in the lowest area where water was stagnant for much longer period than in other places. The long period of stagnant water low salinity resulted in the decrease of turgor pressure with inhibited tree respiration.
