An experiment to study the influence of high drying temperature on corn storability was undertaken at Karawang Post-harvest Laboratory in 1986. Three temperature treatments (40-42 degree, 46-48 degree C and 53-55 degree C) were used. Dried corn was placed in air-tight plastic bags and stored in two forms (shelled and ear corn), at two moisture levels (10 and 14 percent) for 0, 3, 5 and 6 months at ambient temperature. The initial grain damage was observed to be 2.2-2.74 percent, 1.87-2.0 percent and 1.7-1.8 percent when drying was carried out at 53-55 degree C, 46-48 degree C and 40-42 degree C respectively. Their corresponding germination values were 31.5-77.9 percent, 97.3-98.9 percent and 98.7-100 percent. After a storage period of six months, grains with an initial 14 percent moisture, regardless of drying temperature, increased in moisture to 14.9-15.4 percent. Grain damage and germination ranged from 3.8 to 4.8 percent and 0 to 61.3 percent, respectively. The best result was obtained when grains were stored at 10 percent initial moisture content. After six months storage, grain moisture was 10.8 percent and maximum grain damage was 3.25 percent. Germination values had dropped to 14.7 percent.
