Selection for lower ear height in maize (Zea mays L.)

Three cycles of mass selection for low ear height in Pool 1-G10 population of maize was completed in dry season 1986. Evaluation of three cycles of selection along with the original population was conducted in a RCBD with 10 replications in Muara sub station, Bogor, in wet season 1986/87. Mass selection for lower ear height significantly reduced ear height. The rates of linear change per cycle was -5.98 cm. Reduction in ear height was accompanied by reduction in plant height by 4.59 cm per cycle. Selection for lower ear height did not change grain yield significantly. Total number of leaves was reduced, but the number of leaves above the ear did not change. Other desirable correlated response to selection for lower ear height were earlier days to pollen shedding and days to silking, less plant lodging and lower moisture content at harvest.
