Improvement of growth and quality of Acacia mangium Willd seedlings by using several types of medium
1988
Hendromono
Topsoils of red yellow podsolic soil are generally unfavourable for potting nursery seedlings due to their physical characteristic, like poor aeration, high bulk densities and low water holding capacities. The purpose of this experiment is to find a means for the improvement of the quality of potting medium by using organic matter media or mixing the soil with organic matter in order to stimulate the growth and quality of Acacia mangium seedlings. Seven types of medium were tested in this experiment. The experiment was arranged in a randomized complete block design with four replications. The best growth and quality of A. mangium seedlings were obtained with mixtures of : ultisol soil + decomposed sawdust 1:1(v/v) or ultisol soil + coir dust 1:1(v/v). A. mangium seedlings raised in a potting medium consisting of ultisol soil + peat from Gambut village 1:1(v/v) had higher quality than those raised in pure ultisol soil. The use of pure sawdust or pure coir dust for potting medium A. mangium seedlings should be avoided.
