Seed yielding ability of inbred lines and seed production of experimental F1 hybrids of maize [Zea mays] in warm region of Japan

The production of commercial seeds of maize (Zea mays) cultivars has been often influenced by poor climatic conditions such as high temperature, high precipitation, and typhoons in warm regions of Japan. In order to make clear the actual problems in seed production of F1 hybrids, the seed yielding ability of a total of 129 inbred lines was tested over the two years of 1988 and 1989, and the seed productivity of two experimental hybrids of a single-cross F1 hybrid "Toko B26" and a three-way cross F1 hybrid "Toko B27" was investigated in isolated fields in 1987 and 1988, respectively. In addition, the effect of detasseling by cutting at the basal position of flag leaves on seed yields was examined in "Toko B27"
