Test of regeneration in natural Cryptomeria forest, 5: Underplanting of Cryptomeria seedlings
1990
Takeuchi, K. (Niigata Univ. (Japan). Faculty of Agriculture)
The underplanting of Cryptomeria seedlings was tried in the natural Cryptomeria forest on Niigata University Forest in Sado Island, Niigata Prefecture. Through five years, 428 Cryptomeria seedlings, ranging from 3 to 7 years, were planted among natural trees on the northern slope rising 850 m above sea level. After planting all seedlings, the growth was observed. The 3-year-old seedlings planted in the first year grew worse, suffering much loss through snow and hares, compared with the 4-year-old ones planted in the second year. The 5-year-old ones planted in the third year also grew unfavorably. The 6, 7-year-old ones planted in the fourth and fifth year compare favorably with the other previous seedlings, remaining in good condition since planting. At present, it is not confirmed how the meteorological and land conditions influence the planted trees in growing. However, it is concluded that the growth of the planted trees depends on the size of the seedlings
