Germination characteristics of herb seeds in labiatae

The present study was conducted to clarify the characteristics of seed germination of herbs in Labiatae. Peppermint and apple mint seeds inhibited their germination under dark conditions. On the other hand, 13 species of herbs were little affected by the light conditions. There were 6 species of seeds showing the high percentage germination more than 80%, i.e. hyssop, apple mint, oregano, marjoram, sage, clary garden thyme. The other kinds of seeds showing the germination percentage below 70% were necessary to promote the emergence in the field by a method of priming. By the sue of seeds of lavender and rosemary, the rate of germination in lavender seeds shown the lower germinability increased with the time of low temperature (5 degrees C) treatment to 35%. Percentage germination was promoted by the treatment of 100 ppm GA3 in germination medium to about 89% and reached to the maximum in the shorter period of germination process. Germination rate of rosemary seeds was not improved by the treatments of low temperature, and pre-soaking in conc. sulfuric acid or ethanol solution. In storage under different humidity conditions from 0 to 56.2% RH, summer savory and catnip (mint) seeds showed high percentage germination under relatively wet conditions. From these, the requirement of the optimum humidity for keeping the germinability in seed storage is considered to vary with the kind of herb seeds
