Studies on the growth and productivity of forage crops in conversion field from paddy field of ill-drained clayey soil into upland field

Conversion from paddy field of ill-drained clayey soil into upland field does not progress rapidly, even if a drastic measure such as under-drainage is taken. These soil conditions cause various problems including inadequate soil aeration and physiological drouth and low production of the introduced crops. Accordingly, this research was aimed at clarifying the changes of soil physical condition and the growth characteristics introduced forage crops, and certain experiments were conducted to determine how to avoid these harmful conditions. 1. Yearly changes in the soil oxidation and soil pulverization. 2. Growth characteristics of forage crops on the converted upland field. 3. Absorption of mineral nutrients by forage crops in the converted upland field. 4. Differences between corn varieties in the growth phase and nutrient absorption during the years after conversion. 5.Stable production of forage crops on the converted upland field. 6. As shown above, remarkable enhancing effect by planting was found for the conversion of a paddy field into upland field, because the annually increasing soil oxidation was caused by the conversion. With regard to the adaptability of crops to the converted upland field, corn showed frequent injury in the initial stage of the conversion but some measures to counter that damage were established such as variety selection, cropping system, and fertilization method
