1. Field experiments were conducted to analyze the interaction between varietal characteristics and environmental factors in affecting the yield and quality of sugar beets. Four varieties (Hokkai 54, Highrave, Monohomare and Sunrabe) were treated by combinations of the following items: seven levels of fertilization, three levels of harvest time and five test locations. 2. The results of the variety analysis are as follows: (A) all main production figures were in significant correlation with all analysis items. (B) The interaction between variety and harvest time was significant on a 1% level for root weight, and on a 5% level for both sugar content and unrefinable sugar content. It was remarkable that Hokkai 54 was higher in root weight and lower in sugar content than the other varieties. (C) the interaction between variety and fertilization was significant on a 1% level for sugar content, Na content, A-N content, and unrefinable sugar content. Under the heavier fertilization, Hokkai 54 showed the smallest deviation of declines in sugar content, and of increases in K content, Na content, and unrefinable sugar content among the four varieties. Moreover, in A-N content, Hokkai 54 as well as Monohomare, showed smaller deviation than for the two other varieties
