Content of sugar and mineral nutrients of sugar beets [Beta vulgaris], classified by type of rhizomania symptoms

Surveys were carried out in order to investigate the relationship between Rhizomania symptoms on sugar beets and the concentration of mineral nutrients in their leaves. 1. Rhizomania symptoms observed on the tops of sugar beets were classified into four types. i.e. chlorotic yellow type, potassium deficiency type, calcium deficiency type and iron deficiency type. Beet necrotic yellow vein virus (BNYVV) was detected in the lateral roots of all of the deceased and healthy plants. But, in the root tips. it was detected only for those of the diseased plants. Sugar content of the diseased sugar beets was 6-27% lower than for the healthy ones. 2. Compared with the healthy plants, there was a decline in concentration of certain mineral nutrients in the leaves of specific rhizomania symptom: N, Na in the chlorotic type, N, K and Na in the potassium deficiency type, Ca and Na in calcium deficiency type, and N, Na and Fe in the iron deficiency type, through soil analysis, there was found little difference between the soils around diseased sugar beets and those around healthy ones in the content of potassium, calcium and iron, being available for sugar beets. 3. It was concluded that these Rhizomania symptoms were due to a deficiency in mineral nutrients caused by an inhibition of nutrient absorption by roots that had been heavily damaged by the virus infection
