A basic study on the environment and the distribution of food animals around coastal structures at the sandy beach

The development of marine propagation in Japan is tried to enhance the productivity of animals, for example flatfish or crustacean decapods, which inhabit the surf zone or around the surf zone of the sandy beach. Abundance of food is one of the important factors for productivity enhancement of them, but the condition to propagate food is not clear. The development of structures available in the sandy beaches is essential to make food abundant, and it seems to be effective for development to know the relation between the environment and distribution of food animals around present coastal structures at the sandy beaches. The distribution of benthic and nektonic food animals was researched at the offshore breakwater zone and pier breakwater zone. Benthic animals mainly consisted of polychaeta and crustacea, was more abundant at the inside of structures where the mud percent of the bottom materials was increased though crustacea was apt to decrease or to be less than polychaeta. On the other side, nektonic food animals mainly consisting of mysids were more abundant at the 100-500 meter range from the pier breakwater. It was speculated from the results of the measurement and simulation of current condition that the distribution of food animals related to the circulation and calmnization of severe and variable current conditions by structures
