Groundfish community in the coastal waters off Iwate prefecture [Japan]

A groundfish survey was carried out in the coastal waters off Iwate Prefecture using a bottom trammel net, a bottom long line and a small trawl net at depths ranging 70m to 200m. The number of species and individual caught by the bottom trammel net and the total weight of the catch reached a maximum in spring and a minimum in autumn. An abundant number of large size fishes, i.e. Physiculus maximowiczi, Theragra chalcogramma, and Alcichthys alcicornis etc., were caught using the bottom trammel net and the bottom long line. Of these, P. maximowiczi was the most abundant species, was caught all throughout the year, and had the largest mean body length aside from T. chalcogramma and Gadus macrocephalus which appeared only in winter and spring. It was estimated from an examination of stomach contents that the amount of fish predated by P. maximowiczi was the largest among the fishes in the study. It was concluded that P. maximowiczi is the dominant species and its trophic level is the highest in the groundfish community in the coastal water off Iwate Prefecture
