[The use of progestagens to manipulate the oestrous cycle in the bovine]

An evaluation of the different systems to manipulate the oestrous cycle of cattle using progestagens is revised. A common trend observed in this review is a constant reduction of progestagen therapy to minimize the deleterious effect on fertility of long term exposure to progesterone. Although oestrous expression is generally higher than 80 percent, fertility following synchronization with progestagens is about 43 percent, with even more modest figures for nursing cows and in poor body condition
