[Stem and petiolar anatomy of Gnetum L. in Peninsular Malaysia]

From the vessel anatomical studies, both the scalariform pits and perforation plates were found to be present in the petioles of all species: G. cuspidatum Bl. G. gnemon L., G. gnemonoides Brongn., G. latifolium Bl., G. macrostachyum Hook. f., G. microcarpum Bl., and G. tenuifolium Ridl. The scalariform pits and perforation plates were also present in the stem of all the species except in G. gnemon l. and G. tenuifolium Ridl. Additional observations parenchyma, sclerenchyma, vascular except in G. gnemon L. and G. tenuifolium Ridl and on parenchyma, sclerenchyma, vascular bundles, tubes, tracheids and crystals were also described and compared for the species. These findings on vessel morphology of stem and petiolar anatomy support further the possible evolutionary relationship between the Gnetales and the angiosperms
